Jaclyn Smith was born Jaclyn Ellen Smith on October 26, 1947. She is probably best known for the role of Kelly Garrett in the television series Charlie’s Angels which ran from 1976-1981. She was the only female lead to remain with the show for it’s entire run.
Let’s go back a bit to her earlier days…Jaclyn was born in Houston, Texas. She is the daughter of Margaret Ellen and Jack Smith. She attended Trinity University in San Antonio. After college she moved to New York City. She studied ballet from the age of three and aspired to become a famous ballerina but her career aspirations shifted to modeling and acting as she found work in television commercials and print ads, one of the ads was for Breck shampoos. She became the “Breck Girl” in 1971. A few years later she became spokesmodel for Wella Balsam shampoo. Farrah Fawcett also was another spokesmodel for the Wella company (Farrah of course starred opposite Jaclyn on Charlie’s Angels).
A couple of Jaclyn’s first films were The Adventurers and The Bootleggers. Some of her early TV appearances, which were bit parts, were on The Rookies (starring Kate Jackson) and Get Christie Love and she had recurring roles on McCloud and Switch.
Then came Jaclyn’s first appearance on Charlie’s Angels, the 2 hour movie of the week was seen on TV’s across America on March 21, 1976. I really liked this show and Jaclyn (Kelly Garrett) was my favorite! I remember collecting Charlie’s Angels memorabilia. I had all three dolls, Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith), Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett) & Sabrina Duncan (Kate Jackson), bubble gum cards, posters, magazines, some school supplies (I think I had some notepads and folders) & the pink van (I remember the neat decals they had for the van, I still have the van and the original box that the it came in!). Cool memories! Anyways this was one of my favorite shows on TV!
Jaclyn went on to many made for TV movies and miniseries, over 30 of them! Some of which are The Bourne Identity (1988), Rage of Angels (1983) and Windmills of the Gods (1988). She has always been a pleasure to watch in whatever she has been in.
In 1985 she created her own line of clothing for Kmart. More than 100 million women have purchased clothing or accessories bearing her name. Wow! Jaclyn went into the furnishings market and Kmart has a product line of bedding and bath accessories called Jaclyn Smith Today. She was a spokesmodel for Max Factor and released her own perfume called “California”. It’s popularity led Max Factor to release “California for Men.”
Jaclyn has been married four times. Her first marriage was to actor Roger Davis (1968–1975). She was married to actor Dennis Cole in 1978 (he appeared a few times on Charlie’s Angels, the couple divorced in 1981). In 1981 she married filmmaker Tony Richmond. The couple have two children, Spencer Margaret and Gaston. They divorced in 1989. Since 1997 she has been married to Houston cardiothoracic surgeon Bradley Allen.
Despite her many accomplishments, Jaclyn’s first priorities are her family. Being a daughter, mother, and wife continue to be the most important elements of her life. I think she is one of the most beautiful and classy ladies to grace this earth and I hope she continues acting for many more years to come!
