Beauty and the Beast will begin October 11, 2012 on The CW, it stars Kristin Kreuk (“Smallville”) as Catherine Chandler and New Zealand actor Jay Ryan (“Terra Nova”) as Vincent Koslow. It is described as a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist. The 1980’s version that ran on CBS starred Ron Perlman as the mythic man beast and Linda Hamilton as the object of his affection.
From the CW press release:
Detective Catherine Chandler is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective. Several years earlier, Catherine witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen. Catherine would have been killed too, but someone – or something – saved her. No one has ever believed her, but she knows it wasn’t an animal that attacked the assassins…it was human.
Years have passed, and Catherine is a strong, confident, capable police officer, working alongside her equally talented partner, Tess. While investigating a murder, Catherine discovers a clue that leads her to a handsome doctor named Vincent Keller, who was reportedly killed by enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Catherine learns that Vincent is actually still alive and that it was he who saved her many years before. For mysterious reasons that have forced him to live outside of traditional society, Vincent has been in hiding for the past 10 years to guard his secret – when he is enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super-strength and heightened senses. Catherine agrees to protect his identity in return for any insight he may have into her mother’s murder. Thus begins a complex relationship between Catherine and Vincent, who are powerfully drawn to each other yet understand that their connection is extremely dangerous for both of them.
Kristin Kreuk & Jay Ryan attended the 2012 Comic Con and had this to say about the show: Kristin noted that she has seen “a little” of the original series and didn’t base her performance on Linda Hamilton’s work. “I don’t think I could compare myself or try to be like her,” she said.
Ryan, meanwhile, said the series is still working on the beast’s look. “It’s still in development from the pilot, we’ve adapted it a little bit more,” he said. “He’s not a lion now that he’s a military experiment, there’s a chemical in his body.”
This series also stars Max Brown (“The Tudors,” “MI-5”) as Evan Marks, Nina Lisandrello (“Nurse Jackie”) as Tess Vargas, Nicole Gale Anderson (“Make It or Break It”) as Heather Chandler, Austin Basis (“Life Unexpected”) as J.T. Forbes, and Brian White (“The Shield,” “The Cabin in the Woods”) as Joe Bishop.
I loved the 1980’s version, such great acting from Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. I also loved the 1991 Walt Disney movie version, such a sweet story, filled with such lovable characters and a wonderful soundtrack!
I will have to give this one a watch in the Fall and see how it rates. *Makes mental note to self not to compare to the 1980’s version, lol* It’s never good to compare…just enjoy it for what it is….
