Favorite Cartoons of the Past – Part 1

I was in the mood to blog about some of my favorite cartoons from the past…To get my weekend started, every Friday afternoon I would make my hideout with a large coffee table, a big blanket or sheet thrown over the table with lots of comfy pillows (my pet poodle, Francie, would always jump on top of it and I would have to redo it again, lol!) Anyways, Saturday morning was finally here after waiting all week long for the day to sit in my jammies, with my sugar coated cereal of choice and watching my favorite cartoons!

H. R. Pufnstuf was originally broadcast from September 6, 1969, to September 4, 1971, produced by the wonderful minds of Sid and Marty Krofft, this show was their first live-action, life-size puppet cartoon. It was always so full of excitement and so colorful and by gosh I just loved that overstuffed friendly dragon…the theme to the show was a catchy tune…

H.R. Pufnstuf,
Who’s your friend when things get rough?
H.R. Pufnstuf
Can’t do a little cause he can’t do enough.

Once upon a summertime
Just a dream from yesterday
A boy and his magic golden flute
Heard a boat from off the bay
“Come and play with me, Jimmy
Come and play with me.
And I will take you on a trip
Far across the sea.”

But the boat belonged to a kooky old witch
Who had in mind the flute to snitch
From her broom broom in the sky
She watched her plans materialize
She waved her wand
The beautiful boat was gone
The skies grew dark
The sea grew rough
And the boat sailed on and on and on and on and on and on.

But Pufnstuf was watching too
And knew exactly what to do
He saw the witch’s boat attack
And as the boy was fighting back
He called his rescue racer crew
As often they’d rehearsed
And off to save the boy they flew
But who would get there first?

But now the boy had washed ashore
Puf arrived to save the day
Which made the witch so mad and sore
She shook her first and screamed away.

H.R. Pufnstuf,
Who’s your friend when things get rough?
H.R. Pufnstuf
Can’t do a little cause he can’t do enough.

H.R. Pufnstuf,
Who’s your friend when things get rough?

Can’t do a little cause he can’t do enough.

Their nemesis is evil Benita Bizarre (Martha Raye) and her assistants Flunky Rat (Sharon Baird), Woofer and Tweeter (Joy Campbell and Van Snowden).

Bugaloos (Intro) Theme Song Lyrics:

The Bugaloos
The Bugaloos
We’re in the air and everywhere
Flyin’ high
Flyin’ loose
Flyin’ free as a summer breeze
Happy as a summer breeze

The Bugaloos
The Bugaloos
We’re in the air and everywhere!!!

Bugaloos (Outro) Theme Songs Lyrics:

The Bugaloos
The Bugaloos
We’re in the air and everywhere
Flyin’ high
Flyin’ loose
Flyin’ free as a summer breeze

The Bugaloos
The Bugaloos
We’re climbing high and diving low
Through the sky
Across the land
Straight to you with a helping hand
Ready with a helping hand

We are friends indeed
Should you need
If you ever need

The Bugaloos
The Bugaloos
We’re in the air and everywhere!!!

Joy: From you

The Bugaloos
The Bugaloos
Climbin’ high and flying free…

This was one of the most psychedelic cartoon you’ll ever come across with groovy music to boot! A real treat!

Lidsville was Sid and Marty Krofft’s third television show which aired from 1971–1973. It featured a teenage boy named Mark (Butch Patrick) who fell into the hat of Merlo the Magician (Charles Nelson Reilly) and arrived in Lidsville, a land of living hats ruled by an evil, green skinned magician named Horatio Hoodoo. Hoodoo captures Mark, but he manages to escape Hoodoo and his gang of bad hats and takes Hoodoo’s genie named Weenie (Billie Hayes) in the process. Mark then heads for Lidsville where he befriends the good hats that live there and not only does he help the good hats try to gain independence from Hoodoo, but tries to find a way to get back himself and Weenie back to the real world.

Here’s the lyrics of the theme song…

In the middle of the summer, in the middle of a park
there began a great adventure for a boy who’s name was Mark.
He had come to see the magic man, along with all the children
and was so began the day that Mark was never to forget.

He performed all sorts of miracles and Mark was so impressed
that when the time arrived to go he lagged behind the rest.
Then quietly he did return the secret of the hat to learn
but everyone had gone away and darkness held it’s breath.

The moment that he touched the hat the room began to glow
and as he put it down and ran the hat began to grow and grow and grow and grow and grow and grow and grow and grow and grow and grow.

He was stunned and he was fascinated still he had to see
there was something deep inside the hat what could that something be?
Then cautiously each step he took
he climbed upon the brim to look
and all at once the hat began to shake and rock…LOOK OUT!

Falling, falling into the hat he fell…
spinning, turning, whirling, twirling…
down, down…
and when he looked into the skies, he couldn’t believe his ears or eyes…

Lidsville is the koo-koo-kookiest
Lidsville is the ki-ki-kickiest
Lidsville is the groo-groo-grooviest
Lidsville is the living end, friend
If you get a chance to go, go there
you’ll be glad you did
’cause everybody who goes to Lidsville really flips his lid!

…How’s that for a topper!!!
I would always get this show mixed up with H.R. Pufnstuf, the shows seemed similar somehow! And Witchiepoo and Pufnstuf even showed up on an episode of Lidsville!

These three shows were so much fun, the colors were bright and psychedelic and the music was way cool. The stories may have been a little simple (now that I am older I like simple, lol), but they had a spirit and warmth to them. Loyalty and honesty were always at the heart of the characters and good values always triumphed.

Well these are only three of the cartoons that I so loved as a child, I have many more to blog about…stay tuned…
