Mia Wasikowska was born and raised in Australia. At the age of nine she was training as a ballerina but gave that up at 14 due to increasing pressure to achieve physical perfection and her growing dissatisfaction with the industry in general. She is quoted as saying “Dance is about [the] minute things that most people don’t notice but that dancers are trained to see and spend hours obsessing over in front of the mirror. Dancers are kept in a perpetual state of pre-puberty [and] that type of pressure breeds insecurities.” However, she credits ballet with improving her ability to handle her nerves in auditions: “I’d be a very different person if I didn’t have ballet as my background. Dance really toughens you up.”
Her first acting role was a two-episode stint on an Australian soap opera called All Saints. After that came her first movie role in the Australian film Suburban Mayhem. She was in the horror film Rogue, which also starred Radha Mitchell and Sam Worthington, and the drama September. She starred in the short film I Love Sarah Jane, which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
Mia’s first break in the United States came with HBO‘s series In Treatment, she played Sophie, a suicidal gymnast.
Some of Mia’s films include Defiance, Amelia, That Evening Sun, Alice in Wonderland (which also starred Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway), The Kids Are All Right (which starred Annette Bening and Julianne Moore), Jane Eyre, Restless, Albert Nobbs.
Last year, 2011, Mia shot a supporting role in John Hillcoat’s Prohibition-era drama Lawless a film set in the Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a bootlegging gang is threatened by authorities who want a cut of their profits. Mia plays the love interest of Shia LaBeouf (also stars Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Dane DeHaan, Jason Clarke, Noah Taylor). She also filmed the lead, India Stoker, in Park Chan-wook’s English-language debut, Stoker, a film about a teenage girl mourning the death of her father who deals with an uncle that mysteriously shows up to meet the family (also starring Nicole Kidman, Dermot Mulroney, Matthew Goode). Both films will be released sometime this year, 2012. Other films this year that she will be making are Jim Jarmusch’s vampire drama Only Lovers Left Alive (starring Tilda Swinton, John Hurt and Tom Hiddleston) and Sophie Barthes’s film adaptation of Madame Bovary.
